Ecuador's Attorney General said on Monday that the authorities launched an investigation into a prison riot in the west of the country after 10 prisoners were killed and six officers were seriously injured.
Authorities said that on Monday afternoon, the National Authority for the Welfare of Persons Deprived of Liberty and the Ecuadorian Police were sent to Litoral Prison in the city of Guayaquil after a "rebellion" of the prisoners.
The system was restored soon after, according to the National Authority for the Welfare of Persons Deprived of Freedom.
The Office of the Public Prosecutor said Monday evening that the police were gathering evidence and that an investigation was still ongoing into the riots that killed 10 prisoners.
The public prosecutor said in a tweet on Twitter that six officers were also injured in "critical condition".
