The woman was brought to the beach by two kayaks in Maine but died at the scene. The attack occurred while she was swimming near homes off Billy Island in Harrisonville on Monday.

The Maine Marine patrol said that a witness who saw a swimmer was attacked by what appeared to be a shark.

They said she was taken to a dry ground with another woman. Witnesses, who transported the woman to the beach, rowing boats nearby, in the rocky group of islands and peninsula. Responders to the Hartswell emergency came to the scene but were unable to save the woman.

It is not known if the woman's friend was also injured. A call was received from Cumberland County Call Center for assistance.

Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare in Maine. But concerns rose in Massachusetts according to Boston25 News. Cape Cod in Massachusetts, which stretches into the Atlantic Ocean, has seen an increasing number of great white sharks.

In 2018, he attacked a 61-year-old shark that left deep cuts on his torso and leg at Longnock Beach in Truro. A month later, a 26-year-old shark attacked off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. Dr. Skomal said: “The increase in seals is what this shark is targeting.

“It is important for everyone to understand that the likelihood of a shark attack is still remarkably low.”
